Dogtooth violets on Mednik
Dogtooth violet (Erythronium dens-canis) is a rare plant from the Liliaceae familly. Among various environmentalists and nature-lovers from Prague, the population of this plant on the hill Mednik at the Sazava river plays a bit exceptional, nearly cultic role. This can be in part due to flowering of Erythronium in so early spring. It is therefore quite a big passion to make a trip to see Erythronium in blossom as there is no other flora attracting by its flowers at the same time. The only matter has been the debate concerning genuinity of the Erythronium population on Mednik or on the contrary its origin based on someone´s introduction.
The closiest population of for sure genuine dogtooth violets can be found on hillsides of „Silicka planina“ plato over the river Slana in Slovakian carst, near town Roznava, somewhere between villages Slavec and Brzotin.
